Hex Color Lab

A color is made from three numbers: Red, Green, and Blue. Each one goes from 00 to FF in hexadecimal. Slide them around, or type a code yourself!

How does this actually work? −

You already know place value from everyday numbers: each column is worth 10 times the one to its right, and each digit can be 0–9. Hexadecimal works the same way — it just uses base 16. Each digit can be one of sixteen options, so after 9 we keep going with letters:

00
11
22
33
44
55
66
77
88
99
A10
B11
C12
D13
E14
F15

So A means 10, and F means 15. Each colour channel uses two hex digits. Instead of "tens and ones", the columns are sixteens and ones:

Your Red value right now: 00
Sixteens (16) Ones (1)
0 0
0 × 16 = 0 0 × 1 = 0
0 + 0 = 0  (this is the Red amount, 0–255)

That is why each channel runs from 00 (which is 0, none of that colour) up to FF. And FF is just 15×16 + 15 = 255, the brightest possible! Drag the Red slider above and watch this table change.
